What Are T5 Grow Lights?
T5 grow lights are a type of fluorescent grow light that are decent alternatives to LED grow lights and High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights. They resemble the lighting you see in an office building, with long tubes (not as long as the ones in office buildings), but skinnier and are more suitable for growing than T8 and T12. By the way, the “T” stands for “Tube”. Usually, T8 lights are found in office buildings. T12 lights are an older generation of T lights and have been replaced by T8.
What’s So Great About T5 Grow Lights?
As just mentioned, T5 grow lights are good alternatives to LED grow lights and HID lights for your grow room. First, let’s talk about some of the features of T5 grow lights and then we’ll compare those features to HID and LED grow lights. T5 grow lights come in either 2-foot or 4-foot fixtures with ballasts included and a varying number of bulbs, from a single bulb to 16. The fixtures have a low profile, about 2 1/2 inches. Heat output is no where near the output of HID grow lights. Some fixtures are vented, but if not, that’s OK. Bulb lifespan is roughly 36,000 hours. Some fixtures have multiple power sources, allowing you to provide the right amount of light for your plant’s different growing stages.
The biggest advantage T5 grow lights have over LED grow lights is cost. Decent LED grow lights can have very high upfront costs. If a T5 grow light bulb burns out, replacement is easy. A 2-foot bulb costs around $8 and a 4- foot bulb costs around $10. If an LED diode or module blows, you’ll need to send the entire fixture back to the manufacturer for repairs. T5 grow lights have an advantage over traditional HID lighting with their heat output. HID lights run very hot, requiring you to ventilate the heat, which adds to the cost and complexity to your grow room. This is also nice because the tops of your plants can reach closer to the fixture. T5 grow lights are very easy to install – hang the fixture and you’re ready to grow!
